In Wisconsin, Spring Rain Equals Wet Basements

Rain Rain Go Away... Wait til tomorrow!

In Wisconsin, Spring Rain Equals Wet Basements -

Rain Rain go away.
Keep your home safe from water.......... (today is a good day to walk around your home and see that water is being directed properly away from the home)

Wisconsin Real estate is crazy busy right now --- and so are the rains.  If you are a buyer it is a perfect buying season to see if the home you are eyeing has any water issues.  One of the biggest culprits when is comes to home issues is water.   If you are  a home owner, it is a must to always stay on top of water issues - before they become a problem!

We have had our share of precipitation this year, with record snowfalls and now week-long rains.  The constant moisture requires diligent checking on one's home to make sure no water is seeping into the house.  In particular, heavy rains can cause problems in the basement.  Even homes that never had issues with water in the basement may start to see some small areas of seepage.

If you happen to notice water coming into the basement of your home, here are some steps you can take to reduce the dampness:

1.  Clean your gutters.  Often, gutters will be filled with leaves and debris to the extent that rain water actually overflows the gutter edge.  Get out there and clean out your gutters so they can property move rain away from the house.

2.  Check the grading of soil around the foundation.  Ideally, the soil around the foundation should slope away from the house, so that there is a grading of the soil from back to front.  Soil height should be higher on the foundation and lower into the lawn area.

3.  If moisture is a consistent problem, consider installing a sump pump.  A sump pump will help to keep water out of the basement.  Homes that have recurring water in the basement may benefit from this device.

A roofing/gutter contractor, and landscaper, and a basement professional can help you determine the cause of water in the basement as well as possible remedies.  Be sure to get this problem addressed quickly.
